Warning Labels
just so you know, i'm studying for my pesticide license. okay, so i just got the material the other day. but i did already learn something really cool. you know those warning labels. the ones that say danger: poison and then they have a skull and crossbones. apparently they actually are incredibly dangerous. there is this measurement that is called LD50 or Lethal Dose 50. it is called that because in the testing stage of a chemical it is the amount of the chemical exposed through the mouth or skin that killed 50% of the test animals. well the point of me telling you this is that apparently in order for a product to have that danger: poison label it would require a LD50 of 0 to 50 mg/kg. that's like drinking a tablespoon of the stuff; or spilling a few drops of it on your skin and not washing it off. the crazy thing is that even though in our minds its hard to conceive that such a small amount can do something to you it will actually KILL you. okay, so maybe you might not care so much about that, but i sure did. i use to play around chemicals as a kid and always thought my mom was just making it all up. who knew. i guess i'll be paying attention to those labels from now on.
